In the spring of 2020, while locked in a small house in my tiny hometown in New Mexico, I started studying the view outside my backyard. The perfectly proportional E.J. Short & Co. building lit up with light every evening as the sun went down, a slightly different appearance every time. At one point during the summer, the last sliver of sun only illuminated the top triangle on the building, and I spent the rest of the year trying to recreate it on canvas.
